Your initial consultation will last up to 45 minutes depending on your needs. The physiotherapist will ask you a range of questions about your problem, as well as complete a thorough physical assessment, which could include looking at your movement and strength.
They may ask the following questions:
Following your consultation, you will be able to discuss your condition and the best management plan for you. All management plans are individually tailored to suit your needs. Treatment options might include detailed advice and education on the problem and a tailored exercise programme to address movement quality and function. This can also be reinforced by manual therapy (hands on treatment), electrotherapy (machines to aid recovery) training and exercises. To get the most from your treatment you will be asked to follow advice and undertake exercises at home.
After the first appointment, your Physiotherapist will have a treatment plan in action. They will start with a quick chat to determine how you have been doing since the previous appointment. They will then complete a condensed assessment to monitor your progress. The remainder of the session will be then focussed on the ongoing treatment.
This varies a huge amount from person to person depending on what the issue is. This depends on several factors:
Following your first appointment your Physiotherapist will outline how many sessions they think you will need to have and will re-evaluate this as the treatment continues.
During the physical examination, your physiotherapist will need to get to the problem area and direct treatment to this area if appropriate. It is advisable to wear a vest/strappy top or a top that is baggy enough to move out of the way; lower body, either shorts or jogging bottoms are a good idea (you can bring these items with you and change at the clinic). You may be asked by the physiotherapist to remove certain clothing but if you feel uncomfortable, just let your therapist know and they can work around this.
it’s your choice. When you are asked to agree to any form of assessment or treatment, please remember you have a choice. You are always free to say no or to ask for more information before you make up your mind, even during treatment.
Absolutely, if you would like a chaperone in your consultation or treatment, you are welcome to bring someone with you to the appointment. Remember we may need you to partially undress or discuss your medical history in front of them. The choice to bring someone is yours, you should never feel pressured into someone attending your appointment with you if you don’t want them to.
If English is not your 1st Language you are more than welcome to bring a friend or family member to help with communication. Please advise us beforehand so that we can allow some extra time, and make sure the person attending is confident and experienced to do this.
